Festival History
Since the first festival
took place in 1989, the weekend has endured thanks to the
enthusiastic initiative of its founders and the support of private
and corporate donors, diplomats, and ardent local and international
supporters.
The original festival organizer, the South Moravia Heritage Fund,
with the National Monuments Institute, the World Monument Fund and
guests and sponsors of the festival helped put Valtice back on the
cultural map of Moravia. Extensive restorations were made to the
Baroque organ and frescoes in the castle chapel, statues in the
chateau park, and the vast historic greenhouse in neighbouring
Lednice. In 1996 the Lednice-Valtice area was named a UNESCO world
heritage site.
